Few months ago, my son; Sam came to me asking for money to start a business, I was excited that he thought of doing something for himself and not waiting around for me to make it rain for him. I gave him the money and even added extra to it; all thanks to my excitement. Just yesterday, Sam returned rather earlier than usual; walking to his room without paying attention to anyone, I called out to him to find out what the matter was and he told me “Dad! I quit. This business thing is just frustrating. You’re just getting out of one problem, another one has surfaced. I don’t think business is for me; I will find something else to do!” He didn’t even wait to hear me out, he walked out and straight to his room. I didn’t try to stop him; I could understand his pain so I let him alone. About 45 minutes later, I went to check on him in his room, he was rather calm now and even playing video game (trying to cool off I believe). I took the second game pad and told him if he mind me playing with him.
A smile grew on his face as he agreed. We decided to play football – The whistle was blown and the match started; he was surprised as to how competitive I played considering my age.
First half was over and the score was 0 - 0. About 25 minutes into the second half, the ball was at the back of my net; 1 – 0. Now I became more offensive trying to equalize but the more I tried, the more he scored. 85 minutes and the score line read 3 – 0; He couldn’t hide the smile anymore as he paused the game to say “Old man, the game is over already, do you wish to restart the game?” ‘For what na, continue the game’ was my reply as I resumed the game. “But you are losing and there is no way of equalizing so why bother playing till the end?” Now I dropped the game pad and looked straight at him, ‘Son, do you play a game only to win? If your answer is yes then you are yet to grasp the full essence of the game. Winning is good, having positive results is great but one most important part is learning. What you get from a thing is not as important as who you are becoming in the process. You may not win every battle but note that every battle has something to be learnt from if only you pay attention. I may not win this match but I have learnt some skills; if you noticed that in the second half I used some of your skills. So I got something even from this loss. Listen, you may have done terribly in your business but it is not enough reason for you to quit, this business might just be teaching you a lesson that will need in the future but you won’t get the full package of the lesson if you quit – you must see it through to the end! If without doubt business is not your field then you can quit but if you want to quit because of the challenges and problems then I would strongly advise you not to.’ The room was quiet now, I stood up and walked out of his room, about shutting the door, and Sam raised his head and said “Dad! Thanks a lot.” ‘Always welcome son’ I replied him. He smiled and said quickly “So what do you say we finish our game?” I smiled and said ‘I will still like to retain my unbeaten strict in the family.’
Hey, I want to challenge you this day: whatever you are doing, no matter how difficult: DON’T QUIT! Except you are sure that is not where you should be. But don’t quit because of challenges – You may not end up as you planned but I can assure you that you will not remain the same at the end of it. Remember what you get from a thing is not as important as who you are becoming in the process.
